EuroVelo attended FITUR Madrid, the world͛’s second largest travel show (after ITB Berlin) and the main tourism fair for the Spanish, South American and Portuguese markets. In the framework of the Silver Cyclists project, EuroVelo was invited to attend the workshop organised by the European Greenways Association (EGWA) and theSpanish Railways Foundation (FFE): ‘Greenways outdoor: greenways without borders and barriers’.
All the presentations of the event can be found here.
Represented by Jesus Freire, the EuroVelo presentation focused on the EU Funded project ‘Silver Cyclists: increasing the number of seniors undertaking cycling holidays in Europe’. Funded by the COSME programme, the Silver Cyclists project aims at identifying the needs of seniors on cycling holidays, adapting and creating tourist packages for the senior market and extending their holidays to the low and medium season.
With the attendance of Ilona Lelonek from the European Commission (DG GROW – Tourism), as well as Spanish and European stakeholders (tour operators, regions, tourism boards, etc.) the workshop was a success in terms of promoting senior cycling holidays. Furthermore, FITUR was the perfect opportunity for EuroVelo to receive feedback regarding the first product ideas for Silver Cyclists developed in the framework of the project. The exchanges with stakeholders, such as tour operators from Spain, Portugal and South America, provided new connections to these growing markets.
This year’s edition highlighted the increasing recognition of cycling tourism as a lever to sustainable growth. The presence of cycling tourism in the different regional and national booths was quite significant: Spanish Greenways attended with their own booth and many Spanish and European regions (e.g. Flanders, Andalusia, Valencia) used cycling as a promotional tool, offering well developed cycling tourism products. FITUR is considered the warm up of the sector for a season that will start in March at the ITB Berlin. Is there any better place to warm up the season than in Spain?
